How To Connect Dynamo To Battery

The polarisation is done by briefly connecting battery positive to the field coil this induces a permanent magnetism which then initiates charging on start up. Generators (dynamo) have the ability to start charging on the residual magnetism without having battery power fed in unlike an alternator.

  • With both configurations, connect the earthed side of the battery to the dynamo case. The dynamo should turn in the same direction that it would turn when being driven by the engine. If it motors successfully, test to see if the dynamo generates.
  • The warning light is like a pair of balance scales between the ignition circuit and the charging circuit, and that is how it is connected - from the white of the ignition circuit, through the bulb, and to the dynamo/alternator via the brown/yellow.
  • Connect the alternator power output terminal to the battery, and connect the signal terminal to the ignition warning light. To satisfy the alternator's requirement for negative ground, the vehicle electrical system needs to be converted from positive to negative ground , also a simple task.
  • One way is to add a system to manually connect the two battery banks together. This could be another power feed to a split charge relay ( SmartBank has this function designed in as standard) or a manual isolator switch connected between the two battery bank positives to connect them together (obviously this would normally be left switched off).
